Tucson writer Susan Cummins Miller holds degrees in history, anthropology, and geology. She worked as a field geologist and taught geology, paleontology, and oceanography before metamorphosing into a writer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Miller authored the Keridec Rees historic mystery My Bonney Lies Under, winner of the 2025 New Mexico Book Award (Mystery/Thriller); the Frankie MacFarlane, Geologist, mysteries, four of which were finalists for the WILLA Award in contemporary fiction; the nonfiction anthology A Sweet, Separate Intimacy: Women Writers of the American Frontier, 1800-1922; and two poetry collections, Deciphering the Desert, awarded the 2024 Will Rogers Medallion Award in Western Written Poetry, and Making Silent Stones Sing, a finalist for the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award, the Western Writers of America Spur Award (Poem), and the WILLA Literary Award. Her short fiction appeared recently in the anthologies Trouble in Tucson and SoWest: Danger Awaits!
